Tower Theatre :: 7:30pm :: Sunday, September 21
A young girl has a secret, one that has her family scared for their lives and has made her extremely rebellious. As if the teenage years aren’t hard enough, 15-year-old Alex also has to deal with gender issues and the complications of her burgeoning sexuality.
Born with XXY chromosomes, Alex has ambiguous genitalia, but has been raised as a girl. When she reaches puberty, Alex’s parents pressure her to choose a gender. Her mother invites a physician friend and his family to help move the process along, but complications ensue when the doctor’s son, Alvaro, becomes interested in Alex.
While it’s the doctor’s job to convince Alex to have gender assignment surgery, Alex has different ideas altogether, including conquering some blossoming and confusing uncharted sexual territory.
A sophisticated and glorious film set in a picturesque beach town on the coast of Uruguay, XXY carries an emotional beauty and Oscar-caliber performances that resonate with the importance of freedom of choice.
