Tower Theatre :: 3:30pm :: Saturday, September 20
One of the best personal revelations caught on film, this intense and completely honest look inward is Gwen Haworth’s coming out story and first feature length film. While objective third parties shoot most documentaries, Gwen turns the camera on herself and her family and friends, who are alarmingly honest with her as she goes through a difficult transition from male to female.
Stark and complex, this change in herself brings about unexpected changes in her relationships, most notably with Gwen’s current wife, who liked him as a Steven, but vows to try and love him as a Gwen. Gwen’s family works to this day on dealing with the transition, even as Gwen’s surgeries are completed before they’re able to fully adapt to the changes. There’s no shortage of love for Gwen, except maybe from within.
Winner: Leo award, Toronto festival awards, and Gwen won the “Women in Film Award” from Vancouver’s film festival.
Scheduled to Appear: Gwen Haworth
“Though unflinching, Haworth avoids the kind of narcissistic, sensationalized public confessional of TV chatshows, going deeper into the emotional morass sparked by definitions of gender and its roles. With several awards already under its belt, the docu is set to be a fest fave.” – Jay Weissberg, Variety
The Trannymals take their gender issues and genitanimals to court to fight for their rights!
