Bob Hoskins stars in this comic drama as a grumpy old man, recently widowed, estranged from his adult son, and stuck at home with a poor attitude, a bottle of booze, and his beloved homing pigeons.  The Mum next door drops her angel of a daughter off for him to unwillingly babysit, and the new neighbor lady across the way just won’t stop wooing poor Bob.  Why won’t they leave him alone?

As the sweet little girl tends to Hoskins’ broken heart, a scallywag of a boy from the wrong side of the tracks is taken in by the pigeons and becomes someone for Bob to mentor.  And while the neighbor lady continues to cook for and flirt with Hoskins, we learn the secret about her that might break his spirit as well as damage his reputation.

Ruby Blue is exquisitely shot and directed by Jan Dunn (director of Gypo, Fresno Reel Pride 2006), and Hoskins brings amazing depth to his character study.  As things appear to turn badly onscreen, Hoskins shows growth and strength that we all should enjoy, in spite of society’s reluctance to accept people for who they are, even in this day and age.  This is a truly lovely film, both heart-warming and heart-rending in equal measure, with Oscar®-quality performances throughout.
