Ferron fans can rejoice in this first-ever documentary look at her life, career, and new beginnings as she puts together her original band and hits the road for a new adventure.  For those who don’t yet know Ferron, this exquisite documentary will bring you to tears as you learn of the roller coaster of joys and sorrows that have filled this iconic singer/songwriters life.

Compared to Bob Dylan for her intricate lyrics and folk-rock singing, Ferron gave the gay movement serious cred with her melancholy ballads, and at times caused controversy by having men in her band.  Director Gerry Rogers (‘My Left Breast’) encouraged Ferron to hold nothing back as she returns to the stage after a 10 year absence, and the insights provided by her bandmates and friends paint a picture of the gorgeous young Ferron and the slightly bitter and yet heartfelt Ferron in middle age.

Ferron’s disastrous involvement with Warner Bros. Records is in direct contrast with her hash-brownie helped first time performing, and her songs are summed up by Ferron herself:  “I write to the broken, the wounded, the forgotten.”  Her need to write songs that reflect her lesbian experience doesn’t preclude her work from being enjoyed by all who listen, as her haunting and touching lyrics resonate within us all, for who among us hasn’t felt chaotic or lost at some point in our lives.  ‘Ferron:  Girl on a Road’ is a rare chance to encounter a voice from our past, all while quietly contemplating our futures - and feeling the shared remorse and hope found in the voice of a generation.
