This most interesting mockumentary is the rarest of all treats – while it’s a story about two women who choose to have a child, the complexity and closeness comes from the actresses actually having children in real life. Documentary meets improvisation and hilarity as the couple (Angela Vint and wife Megan Fahlenbock) dare to boldly go where no couple has gone before: creating a baby with two biological mothers. The Baby Formula is an extension of Alison Reid’s 2006 short film ‘Succubus,’ shown in our Girl’s Shorts program.
Utilizing the real-life science that has created offspring in mice, Athena bravely opens her womb to the experimental procedure. When wife Lilith tires of rubbing Athena’s feet and fetching cupcakes and sauerkraut, she decides to secretly impregnate herself with yet another hybrid egg.
Now comes the hilarity – telling the wacky family the news. Completely believable, The Baby Formula draws the viewer in through humor and touching scenarios, and is superbly acted by Vint and Fahlenbock. Called the Canadian versions of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, the actresses improvise and ad-lib against the dysfunction of the two families colliding around the promise of grandbabies. A stellar supporting cast delivers during dramatic and comedic action, all while the lovely lady lumps grow to fruition.
This must-see film is riotous fun that can only be had by mixing a repressed brother, judgmental mother and wine-soaked gay fathers with the hilarious motherly turns provided by combining pregnancy, science, and dysfunctional families. Be sure to stay through the credits!
