Certified as the first Dogme95 film made in the UK (and the third in our Starline Series), Gypo uses the techniques (handheld cameras, no special lighting, sound or other effects, and improvisation among the actors) of this Danish tradition to great success. Told in a single story from the perspective of three characters, Gypo unfolds into a gritty story of immigration, abuse, marriage and lesbian desire.
Working-class Helen and Paul live in an industrial town in the UK. Helen is stuck with the full-time job of taking care of her teenage daughter Kelly's young baby. While Kelly runs around being a child herself she befriends Tasha, a young refugee from the Czech Republic who lives with her mother in a trailer on the edge of town. Tasha is running from an abusive husband and working hard to make a new life in the UK, Helen is looking for more than just her familiar and mundane routine, and Paul is so afraid of change and intimacy that he pushes everyone away. Inevitably, Helen and Paul's lives change irrevocably, allegiances shift, and love blossoms unexpectedly.
Gypo has won numerous awards including the Levi's First Feature Award (Frameline 2005) and the British Independent Film Award Best Achievement in Production 2005.
