Tony Comes is considered a modernday hero. He is a firefighter in Toledo, Ohio, one of the toughest areas to have that occupation, but his heroism runs much deeper. Twenty years ago, Comes asserts he was just one of many young men abused by a Catholic Priest. Only now beginning to grapple with the Church's refusal to acknowledge responsibility,Tony Comes is also dealing with the intense psychological and emotional repercussions of this betrayal.
Met with a combination of lies and silence, Comes' guilt over not speaking out at the time and preventing other boys from being abused flows into his own life, as he agonizes about accompanying his daughter to her first communion and inducting her into the faith. More harrowing is the scene where director Kirby Dick gives Comes a camcorder to record his own family confessions, and with it we see Tony tell his own daughter he was abused. A mesmerizing saga that received an Oscar Nomination for best documentary, Twist of Faith shows us a man trying to escape a hell he neither made nor deserves.
