Scheduled to Appear: Shelby Knox
An amazing documentary following the entire high school life of one Miss Shelby Knox, Christian Conservative Virgin, and daughter of lifelong Republican right-wingers in the biblebelt town of Lubbock,Texas.
Shelby is different, however. While willing to take a vow of abstinence in her church, she spends her days fighting the establishment and her fellow conservative student colleagues as an activist for realistic sexual education in the schools. Forced to tears of frustration and nearly universal rejection, Shelby fights onward, convinced that 'abstinence only' is a dangerous policy of education in a town with soaring rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
By her senior year, Shelby has transformed her equality activism to include her school's fledgling Gay Straight Alliance club. Taking on homosexual friends and their fight brings her new challenges with her parents and the local preacher who ministers in teen parking lot hangouts, and with whom Shelby goes one-onone in stimulating intellectual discussions.
A film for all ages (and what should be a must-see for politicians and clergy), viewers can join Shelby Knox after the film for more discussion on topics that will resonate in our own Central Valley community.
